Asphyxiation effect
Combustion requires oxygen. Carbon dioxide is denser than air and can quickly cover the surface of the burning material, pushing the air aside and sharply reducing the oxygen content around the burning material. When the oxygen content drops below a certain level, the combustion reaction cannot continue due to lack of oxygen, thus achieving the purpose of extinguishing the fire. For example, when a fire breaks out in relatively enclosed spaces such as power distribution rooms and computer rooms, carbon dioxide can quickly fill the entire space, isolate oxygen, and effectively extinguish the fire.
 
Cooling effect
When carbon dioxide is ejected from the storage container, it rapidly vaporizes from a liquid state to a gaseous state. This process requires the absorption of a large amount of heat, thereby reducing the temperature of the burning material and the surrounding environment. When the temperature drops below the ignition point of the combustible material, combustion becomes difficult to continue. For instance, in the case of fires involving some solid combustibles, the cooling effect of carbon dioxide can rapidly lower the surface temperature of the burning material and prevent the spread of the fire.
 
Dilution effect
In some fire scenarios, carbon dioxide can dilute the concentration of combustible gases and oxidizing gases within the combustion area. For example, in a gas fire, the injection of carbon dioxide can reduce the mixing concentration of gas and oxygen, weaken the intensity of the combustion reaction until the flame goes out, thus playing a role in extinguishing the fire and preventing secondary disasters such as explosions.
